Our History

The vision for our ministry was first conceived in the hearts of several couples who had a desire for “more of God”.  They, along with Pastor Bernie Newcomb and his wife, Genia, petitioned the Lord weekly for over 3 years for more of His glory, power and presence to be revealed in the churches here in the Central Virginia area.

In early 1998, the Lord began to deal with Pastor Newcomb to pioneer a Full Gospel Ministry here.  Then in May 1998, Pastor Newcomb and his family visited Orange Assembly of God.  While there, Pastor Greg Vogt spoke by a supernatural gift of the Spirit known as “the word of knowledge” (I Corinthians 12:8).  He said, “there is a special anointing here today.  I have been praying for Madison, Greene, Louisa and Page Counties.  I have been praying that God would raise up a mighty work in these areas and someone is here today and God is leading you to raise up one of these works and  I want to pray for you”.  This was undoubtedly a divinely appointed moment, a sovereign move of God’s Spirit because Pastor Vogt and Pastor Newcomb had never met.  This was the beginning of a tremendous move of God in the Central Virginia area.
With the help of Pastor Vogt and the wonderful people of Orange Assembly of God, Central Virginia Assembly of God was officially opened in April 1999 and in September 1999 was set in order as a District affiliated church with the Potomac District Council of the Assemblies of God.  This is truly a miracle, for in less than one year, God grew the ministry to a level that normally takes two or three years to achieve.  God is great His wonders to perform.  To Him be the glory.
The greatest history, however, is not in the nickels and noses, but in the transforming power that God has wrought in the hearts of His people.  Men, women, youth and children have tasted His goodness in many ways they never thought possible.  And today God is equipping His people to PRESS ON in the power of His might by the power of His Spirit to carry this message to people everywhere – that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever.  What He’s done for others, He still does today and He will still do for you.  It is our mission to take this transforming power to every person in Central Virginia, and to people across our country and around the world.  We know according to God’s Word in Phillipians 1:6 that what God has begun He will also complete.  We feel very honored to be a part of HIS STORY here in Central VA and we welcome you to lock hands and hearts with us as we take the love of Jesus to all people.
